The Monitor says that behind the cartoons is the need for Arab leaders to be seen as stronger defenders of Islam than the jihadists who want to unite Muslims and overthrow them. The vision of an Islamic empire, the Monitor says, is falling under the failure of Iranian leadership, a prolonged war with Iraq and disillusionment of the people. The cartoons have provided an opportunity as well as an excuse to posture, the Monitor writes.
